Notes on taking exams

Return to Probability and Statistics

1) The exams are NOT open notes or open book. Do not have any notes, HW solutions, old exams, or any materials not specfically allowed within reach or sight. Violations will be considered cheating. If you bring such materials with you, they must be inside your backpack and under your chair at all times during an exam.
2) You may use the "cheat sheet" you download from my website, only. You may write on the printed side of those sheets, but not the blank side.
3) Do not talk to anyone during the exam except for me.
4) If you must visit the rest room, do not take anything with you and avoid going out when someone else in the class is there.
5) If you forget your calculator, borrow one from me. You may not share calculators.
6) You may not use statistics functions on a calculator such as Student-T, F-test values, etc.
7 ) Do not pass notes, share pencils, or do anything else that looks suspicious. Your classmates will be convinced you are cheating. I will have to come by and question you, which is embarrassing to you and may reveal that you are cheating..
8 ) If you need more time to complete an exam after the scheduled class period is over, I typically will let you continue until someone must leave who has not finished or until 10 minutes after the scheduled end of class, whichever comes first.
9 ) It is not a good idea to miss the exam and take the makeup if you can help it. Note that you must obtain permission in ADVANCE to miss the scheduled exam date. If you miss any exam for any reason, excused or unexcused, you can take the cumulative makeup exam the day before the final exam..

Tips:
1) You will do well if you study hard and long. Work the HW and example problems several times.
2) It is better to know the equations well enough that you use the cheat sheet for reassurance, only. Otherwise, you will waste a lot of time looking back and forth.
3) An older exam is listed on this web site. Please understand that the exam you get will be DIFFERENT, though the difficulty of problems should be similar. Some problems will be similar because there are only so many ways to formulate problems of the same level of difficulty. However, it is a huge mistake to study on the things shown on a previous exam.
